kit bag

north face bandwidth

You might notice there's no big rave-y section about my bag. That's because I haven't found one I really love yet. I couldn't even call this section "script bag" because I don't carry my script in the bag, just the rest of my kit.

I currently use a North Face backpack because it has an organizer panel with lots of pockets and it was on sale. Problem is, it's hard to get a big binder in through the narrow opening of the main compartment. So I carry the binder separately and stick my jacket, snacks, hat, whatever, in the main compartment. But when the main compartment is full of fluffy jacket, it's hard to access the organizer panel through its narrow opening, so I can't see what I'm looking for when I'm fishing for my spare pencil lead. It's really annoying. If I ever decide to change bags I might go for a tote or a messenger; those both have nice big openings. But only if I can find one that also has lots of organizer pockets. And water bottle pockets.

I was recently alerted to Züca bags, which look totally awesome, especially after a shoot where I spent the day wedged in the corner on an applebox. Until the grips took away the applebox. If I had a Züca bag, I could sit on it in a tight space and have all my stuff with me!

camera

Oy. Cameras. I wish I took more pictures than I do. I just can't get in the habit. It's like flossing. It just seems like too much of a pain to get the camera out of the case, turn it on, turn off the flash, slate the scene (shoot the scene number in the script using the macro setting), then actually take the photos. I have a Canon PowerShot from 3 or 4 years ago that works fine, but it's definitely been surpassed by current cameras. The screen is tiny by today's standards. I know some cameras allow you to store photos in folders, which would be an awesome way to organize everything. I also remember something about Ashton Kutcher writing notes on a touchscreen camera while smiling mysteriously, which would be the awesomest (the writing notes part, not the Ashton smiling part). But I can't be arsed to get a new camera. Maybe one day. Until then I'll just have to keep myself motivated.

stopwatch

I use an Ultrak stopwatch that I bought at Feldmar Watch & Clock Center. It works fine. It has a lighted display, and stores a bajillion splits for those "Keep rolling, picking it up again, this time get angrier!" shots. The start/stop button has a lock so it doesn't accidentally get pressed in your bag, which is the best feature ever. I know some people who swear by the SportCount finger stopwatches. I plan on trying these out one day; they look perfect for when you're running around doing exteriors with no monitor and need to keep both hands on your clipboard at all times.
